Two reasons a line moves
Every price change traces back to one of two causes, and confusing them is how bettors misread the market.
- Liability balancing. Money stacks on one side, exposing the book to a lopsided payout. It nudges the price to make the other side more attractive and even out the action. This move says something about where the bets are, not necessarily about the true probability.
- Repricing on information. A team-news update, a lineup change, weather, or a respected bettor's stake changes the book's estimate of the actual probability, and it moves the price to match. This move says something about the outcome.
The problem is that both produce the same thing on your screen: a number that changed. The size and speed of the move give clues, but the honest default is that a move is a question — why did this happen? — not an answer.
Steam and the trap of chasing it
A steam move is fast, coordinated movement across many books in the same direction inside a short window. It reads as sharp money hitting the market broadly, with books re-pricing in near-unison to avoid being picked off. Steam is real information — but it is information about a move that has largely already happened.
Reverse line movement
Reverse line movement (RLM) is the case that most rewards careful reading: the public is piling onto one side, yet the line moves toward the other. On the surface that is backwards — more money should push the price the other way.
The standard interpretation is that a smaller volume of sharp money is outweighing a larger volume of public money in the book's risk calculus, so the book prices to the side it respects. RLM is a flag to investigate: it suggests the informed money and the crowd disagree, and the book has sided with the informed money. It is not, on its own, a reason to bet — it is a reason to look closer at why the disagreement exists.
Key numbers: why size can mislead
A one-point move is not always a one-point move. In sports where games settle on a few common margins, a line crossing one of those key numbers matters far more than its nominal size. In American football, 3 and 7 are the archetypes, because a large share of games land exactly on those margins.

The first and third moves change which side of a common final margin you sit on; the middle one does not. Judging a move by its point count alone misses this entirely. Where a number lands can matter more than how far it travelled.
Closing line value: the signal that lasts
No single move is a reliable verdict, but there is one measurement that is: closing line value. The closing line — the final price before the market settles — has absorbed all the information and money the market will ever apply, which makes it the sharpest estimate available of the true probability. Beating the close consistently, across many bets, is the clearest external evidence that your probability estimates carry a genuine edge rather than short-run luck — which is exactly why value and CLV belong together. It is also why serious bettors track CLV above their week-to-week profit, and why the CLV tracker exists. Line movement, read one move at a time, is a message to interpret. Read across hundreds of bets as CLV, it becomes the closest thing to a verdict the market offers.
